Gary has a unique background that very few academy directors could match. Gary has been a professional player and a college coach for over 30 years at Harvard University and currently at Bentley University. Gary holds a NSCAA Premiere Coaches license (with distinction) and a "Pro B" and an "A" License from USSF. Gary also completed a master’s degree in psychology at Harvard and graduated in March 2009. He wrote a master's thesis entitled "Acute Effects of Soccer Heading on Cognitive Functioning". Recently, Crompton completed his MBA with a concentration in Leadership from Bentley University.
Playing Career: Two-time captain and Academic All American at the University of Maine, Gary graduated with a double degree in Sociology and Psychology in 1992. Upon graduation he started his professional career with the Cape Cod Crusaders and was elected league all-star in 1995. In 1996 Crompton was selected to the first MLS combine in California. Inclusion in that group of players helped Gary land a spot with the Worcester Wildfire in the “A” League. In 1997, Gary was selected team captain, league all-star and team MVP. The Wildfire latter became the Boston Bulldogs were Gary played until signing with the Connecticut Wolves in 2000. Midway through the 2000 campaign, Crompton was traded back to the Bulldogs for the remainder of the season. He ended his professional playing career in 2002.
Coaching Career: Gary is currently the Head Coach at Bentley University. Gary was named to the position in August of 2008. In his first year with the team, Bentley made the conference playoffs for the first time in five years. Gary was the assistant coach for Harvard University since 1994. In 1994, 1996, and 2006 the Crimson won the Ivy League championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The 2023 NE10 Coach of the Year, Gary Crompton has been the head coach of the Bentley University men's soccer program since 2008.Crompton guided the 2023 Falcons to a second-place finish in the NE10 regular season standings after they were picked ninth in the preseason coaches' poll. Crompton has had a distinguished tenure at Bentley. He has led his Falcons to the Northeast-10 Playoffs 11 times. He has also led the program to the NE10 Finals twice in the highly competitive conference, in 2017 and 2010. The program also excels academically under Crompton's guidance. Every member of the 2023 roster was named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll in the fall semester.
Crompton has over three decades of experience working with young players at the club and camp level from around the country. Crompton has been the Director of Coaching at SFC New England, a premiere youth club based in the Greater Boston area for 12 years.
